To the Editor,
The Task Force has made a recommendation to the mayor to outsource our Beech Grove 911 Dispatch Center to Indianapolis Metropolitan Communications as soon as possible. The budget shortfall is somewhere between $1.2 million (mayor’s letter 04/2010) and $1.6 million (Task Force letter 04/2010). It seems even Mayor Wright and his appointed task force are unable to agree on the correct numbers. $400,000 is the difference between keeping dispatch or not!

Dear Editor,
Recently a TASK FORCE put together by Mayor Wright recommended that our Dispatch Center close. This is a continuation of other cuts that have been recommended to off set an approximate 1.2 million dollar shortfall for 2010. Last week the “TASK FORCE” held a public hearing to discuss cuts that are recommended to balance the budget.

The organ starts to play and although you’re nervous, you shouldn’t be. You’re in love and this quickly-assembled Las Vegas wedding proves it. You’ve got the minister who barely knows you and you’re standing in a chapel you’ve never seen before. If that’s not love, what is? You’ve even got Elvis holding the wedding ring.

I need a haircut. Again. This is ridiculous. I just got one, what, a month ago? And now I have to get another? Sheesh. Maybe you can tell I don’t particularly enjoy haircuts.

I may be good enough to marry, but it appears I’m not to be trusted when it comes to registering for my wedding this summer. Read the rest of this entry »
And that’s not just coming from my fiancée; it’s everyone. I’ve been jokingly (and sometimes seriously) told that I’m not to add anything to the registry without Jess’ approval, and I feel pretty comfortable blaming that stupid Miller Lite commercial.
Wow. I am severely stressed. And all of it began an hour ago when I decided to lie down the floor to test my bathing suit glob. I turned 50 years old last December. I will readily admit that if anybody in the world needs to wear a one-piece bathing suit, it is definitely me.

Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce you to Rico the lounge singer. People, Rico. Rico, people. Read the rest of this entry »
Rico exists only in the depths of my ridiculous imagination. It’s the name I have given to this little voice inside my head that mocks me – persistently and hilariously – when I am at my second favorite job at the Indiana History Center.
Some of you may remember a column I wrote a few months ago on my new Blackberry and how it quickly transformed me into one of those seemingly inconsiderate Blackberry users, whom I promised myself I would never imitate.

Since I have so few skills of my own, I surround myself with people who have some sense. When I accidentally poison the farmer or injure myself from being so clumsy, for example, I grab my phone and press A. My friend Allison has no problem with puke, splinters, scrapes, stitches or blood.

To Parents, Educators, and Patrons of Perry Township Schools:
On May 4, 2010, the citizens of Perry Township will have an opportunity to participate in an important Primary Election process, which will affect all citizens, not just those who have children in our school system. As you may remember, in the 2008 election, the citizens of Perry Township turned out in record numbers to elect Mercer, Mertz, & Freeman to the MSDPT School Board. Those three individuals very quickly began a process of “rebuilding trust and restoring pride in our school board leadership.” Now our citizenry has an opportunity to continue that forward moving process by electing Jon Morris & Ed Denning to that team of new community leadership. These two ethical and knowledgeable candidates are qualified for numerous reasons:
* They are individuals of honesty and integrity.
* They are citizens with high moral values and standards.
* They possess a strong desire to make our school system the best it can be through well-informed and pro-active leadership.
* They possess knowledge of our school system and its needs.
* They are willing to devote the time to serve effectively.
* They are pledged to open communications with the community and will respond to the needs of students, parents, teachers, administrators, and patrons.
* They are pledged to invest in sound financial management and business practices.
* They are pledged to follow the Code of Ethics of the Indiana School Boards Association which defines the function of a school board member as policy maker and not administrator.
* They are service-minded individuals who volunteer to support the activities and people in our community.
* They are pledged to continue to build community trust and pride in the leadership of our school board.
* They have no personal agendas or vendettas, only goals of service to the community.
Our beloved township needs loyal, ethical, open-minded, visionary, and sensible leaders who will be receptive to the community they serve and who seriously care about our educational system and its impact on our children. To insure a leadership that represents the values of this township, I urge all citizens to go to the polls on Tuesday, May 4, and vote for Morris & Denning for Perry Township School Board.
