
Ruth E. Campbell, 80, of Franklin, died Sunday, Aug. 23, at the Franklin United Methodist Community. Ruth was born Oct. 17, 1928, in Shelbyville to Walter and Lelia (McCormick) Crosby, who preceded her in death. She attended school in Franklin Township, then went to Indiana Central College, after which she pursued a teaching career and earned a graduate degree. After a break to raise her family, she was employed by Perry Township for several years, first as a substitute and then as a teacher’s aide. She was an active member of University Heights United Methodist for many years and also enjoyed working as a volunteer in the crafts room at St. Francis Hospital in Beech Grove. She is survived by three children, Diana (Tom) Maier, Brian (Kathy) Campbell, Jonathan (Karen) Campbell and five grandchildren. Her husband of 58 years, Eldon “Gene;” a daughter, Leslie; and a brother, Malcolm, preceded her in death. Memorial services will take place Sept. 12, at 10:30 a.m., at University Heights United Methodist Church, 4002 Otterbein Ave. Gifts may be made to the church in lieu of flowers.
Marsha Ground Sandefer, 53, of Indianapolis, died August 9, 2009. She was born December 21, 1955, in Beech Grove to Charles Arlis and Carol Ground. She was a mortgage loan officer currently for Bank of America. Her mother, Carol Ground, and grandparents, Wayne Jackson and Edgar and Maggie Ground preceded her in death. Survivors include her sons, Ross (Ashley) Sandefer and Jay Sandefer; father, Charles Arlis Ground; grandmother, Lorene “Mema” Jackson; sisters, Sheila (Mike) Smith, Cheryl (George) Moore, and Gina (Chuck) Bryson; former husband, Marty Sandefer; stepchildren, Carey (Roger) Johnson and Andy (Jennifer) Sandefer; nieces, Lindsay Smith, Natalie (Jason) Lloyd, and Maggie Moore; nephews, Eric and Dr. Joe Smith; grandchildren, Nicholas and Noah Johnson, Gabby, Max, Bella, and Jack Sandefer and many aunts, uncles, cousins and loyal friends. Wilma Basham, 84, of Beech Grove, died Friday, August 7. Wilma retired from Dow Chemical. She is survived by her son, Paul (Deborah) Basham; sisters, Nora Jordan and Katherine Hellwig; and grandchildren, Brandon and Jennifer Basham. Alma Louise (Smith) Branham, 72, of Indianapolis, died August 1. She was born April 24, 1937, in Hardensburg, Ind., to Harry and Emma G. (England) Smith, who preceded her in death along with her husband Earl Leo Branham, Sr. and sons Ricky Lee, Everett Leo, and Kenneth Branham. She was a homemaker. She is survived by sons Michael Gene (Karen), Earl Leo (Kathy) Jr., Roger Dale, Gary Dean Branham; daughters Pamela Kay Smith and Chrystal Dawn (Rickey) Butrum; brothers Harry Smith, Jr. and Harold (Kathy) Smith; sisters, Hazel Moore, Phyllis Meyers and Ethel Salvage; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Visitation will be Thursday, August 6, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Fountain Square Mortuary. Graveside service will follow at 2 p.m.at Hardensburg Cemetery in Hardensburg, Ind. Charles William Mason, 87, of Greenwood, died July 26. Charles was born to the late Charles Henry and Ethel Ann Bradley Mason in Orange County, Ind., on August 11, 1921. During WWII he served in the Army Air Corps. Charles was retired from the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company. Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Ursla Louise Chisham Mason; children, Charlene Riley, Dr. William and Karen Mason, Wanda and John Wayne Christy, and Brenda and Willard Sumner; sister, Patricia and Dennis Loveall; 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Burial will be held at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens on Friday, July 31.
Michael J. Borders, 51, of Indianapolis, died July 14. He was born March 25, 1958, in Indianapolis. He worked for U.S. Airways, ATA and American Express. Survivors include his parents, Walter and Marie (Grubbs) Borders; brother, Roger (Beth) Borders; sisters, Doris Lewis and Karen (William) Barker; nephews, Tony (Erin) Turk, Jeremy (Krista) Barker, Nicholas (Kristen) Lewis, Jason Lewis, Joshua Borders, and Nathan Barker; Kalie, Jalynn, and Nicholas Lewis, Jr, Lauren, Taylor, and Reagan Turk, Abigail and Austin Barker. Michael also leaves behind special friends, Jeff Stewart and Sally Peden, as well as many other family members and friends. Services were held Sunday, July 19, at G. H. Martha May (Youngblood) Adams, 65, of Indianapolis, died July 1. She was born in Russellville, Ky., to Jessie E. & Ethel M. (Holden) Youngblood, who preceded her in death. She was a homemaker. Her survivors include sons, Robert and Eric Edwards; daughters, Linda Marie Erath, Tabitha Ann Edwards and Vanessa Dawn Whitlock; brother, Jessie Youngblood; 12 Grandchildren and 2 Great-grandchildren. Carol A. Cheek, 86, of Beech Grove, died July 2, 2009. She was born July 26, 1922, to John and Katherine Mennel. Her husband, Harold G. Cheek, and brother, Thomas Mennel, preceded her in death. Survivors include her children, Michael (Janet) Cheek, Paul Cheek, John (Ann) Cheek, and Barbara Cheek; sister, Katherine Nelson; grandchildren, Kay, Sara, Liz, Andy, and John; and two great grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was held July 6, 2009 at St. Paul Hermitage. She was laid to rest in St. Joseph Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul Hermitage.
Betty Jean Welch, 82, of Indianapolis, died July 1, 2009. Survivors include her husband of almost 55 years, Raymond Welch; sisters, Freda White, Ruth Foster, and Inez Carol Ihlenfeldt; brothers, Russell and David Bowles; and numerous nieces and nephews. Services were held Monday, July 6, 2009. She was laid to rest in Crown Hill Cemetery.
Donald W. Carey, 77, of Beech Grove, died June 29. He was born April 7, 1932, in Beech Grove to the late William and Thelma Carey. He served in the United States Navy. He retired as Lieutenant from the Beech Grove Fire Department in 1987 after 30 years of service. Donald is survived by his daughters, Beth Carey, Kelli Carey, and Victoria (Chad) Ryan; sister, Patricia Fox; and grandson, Jacob Ryan. He was preceded in death by his wife, Diane L. Carey; sisters, Dorothy Arnold and Betty Rolfsen; and brothers, Billy and David Carey.
