Ruth (McCleery) Keever, 92, of Indianapolis, died May 1, 2010. She was born March 23, 1918 in Washington County, Indiana to the late Thomas and Lisa McCleery. Ruth is survived by her children, Bruce (Barbara) Keever, Phyllis Keever, Dena Keever, and Arthur Keever; grandchildren, Tim (Bethany) Keever and Nathan (Sarah) Keever; two great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur C. Keever; siblings, Lee McCleery, Margart Swartz, Ruby Grant, Fred, Carl, Avis, and Patty McCleery. Ruth was a Christian, and had worked as a cashier at W.H. Block. She was also a homemaker. Services were held May 5 at G.H. Herrmann Greenwood Funeral Home, 1605 State Rd. 135 and Olive Branch Road.

Thomas E. Mappes 82, of Indianapolis, died in his home on April 22, 2010. He was born March 8, 1928, in Indianapolis to the late Alois and Florence E. (Snyder) Mappes. Thomas was a 1947 graduate of Sacred Heart High School. He married the former Betty J. Schmoll at St. Roch Catholic Church on April 10, 1948, which became his longtime parish. Mappes served in the United Stated Marine Corps. He worked as a plumber for 44 years and was a 60-year member of the Plumbers and Steamfitters Local #440. Thomas was a member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Ducks Unlimited and Hoosier Labrador Retriever Club. Thomas coached for the Catholic Youth Organization, Indiana Central Little League, and Roncalli High School. He was awarded the St. John Bosco award in 1997. His wife of 61 years, Betty, and brothers Norbert, Joseph and Bernard preceded him in death. Survivors include his sons, Thomas (Kim) of Nineveh, Indiana, Steven, Daniel (Pat); daughters, Elaine (Rick) Shaw, Kathleen (Mike) Rozens and Jennifer (Ryan) Thacker all of Indianapolis; sisters Dolores Hussong, Catherine Bickers, and Caroline Underwood; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. G. H. Herrmann Funeral Home, 5141 Madison, made arrangements for a Mass of Christian Burial held at St. Roch Catholic Church on April 26 followed by burial at Calvary Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Roch Catholic Church.

Ruth C. Nickum, 95, of Indianapolis, died April 23, 2010. Ruth retired from the US Postal Service after 23 years. She is survived by her sisters, Esther Biggs, and Theresa Denson; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister, Marie Biggs. Services were held on April 26 at G.H. Herrmann Madison Avenue Funeral Home, 5141 Madison Avenue. Burial at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Lloyd A. Scales, 66, of Indianapolis, died April 25, 2010. He was born August 14, 1943 in Louisville, Kentucky to Charles and Beatrice Scales. Lloyd was a veteran of the United States Army. On January 18, 1969, he married Rita E. Buchanan. In 1996, after 30 years of service, he retired from AT & T as Transportation Manager. Lloyd was a member of Beech Grove United Methodist Church, founding member of W.A.F.F.L.E, and leader in AWANA. He is survived by his wife, Rita E. (Buchanan) Scales; children, Kenneth R. (Elaine) Scales, Steven K. (Tamara) Scales, LaDonna M. (Matthew) Neuhaus; grandson, Justin D. Scales; and mother, Beatrice Scales. His father, Charles Scales, and brothers, Robert and Raymond Scales, preceded him in death. Funeral will be held April 29 at 10 a.m. at Little & Sons Beech Grove Chapel, 1301 Main St. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to the Beech Grove United Methodist Church Building Fund.

Renford L. Cherry, 88, died April 9, 2010. He was born February 23, 1922 in Moss, Tennessee to the late Otis D. and Nettie (Allen) Cherry. He was preceded in death by his wife, Myra (Mann) Cherry; son, Roger Cherry; three brothers and four sisters. He is survived by children Joyce (Art) Sauers, Danny (Alice) Cherry, David Cherry, Sandy (Larry) Southworth, Connie Bisesi, Carol (Danny) Rickard, Marilyn (Charles) Sanderson and Rhonda (Harold) Moore; brother, Willis Cherry; 21 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Services were held April 12 at Wilson St. Pierre Chapel of the Chimes. Burial at Lincoln Memorial Gardens.

Richard F. Kelley, 67 died March 28, 2010. He was born August 30, 1942 in Indianapolis to Wilfred and Mary Kelley. Richard served in the Army during the Vietnam War. In 1998 he retired from Navistar. Richard was a member of St. Bernadette Catholic Church. Survivors include his wife, Charlene; son Timothy; daughter Stacey Showalter; brother W. Joseph (Wanda); sisters Barbara Englert, Rose Kelley and Kathy Dishman; granddaughters Shelby and Sydney Showalter. Burial was held March 31 at Calvary Cemetery.

Richard S. Neuhausel, 75, of Beech Grove, died March 21, 2010. He was born June 29, 1934 in Indianapolis to the late Sylvester and Marian Neuhausel. Richard retired from Amtrak as a carman in 1996 after more than 43 years of service. Richard was the husband of 45 years to his wife, Sharon A. Neuhausel, she survives. Other survivors include sons, Harold Neuhausel and Tony Clark; siblings, Herbert Neuhausel, Mary Alice Grubbs, and Arthur Neuhausel; two grandchildren and three great grandchildren. One brother, Johnny Neuhausel, preceded him in death. Visitation is Wednesday, March 24 from 4 – 8 p.m. at Little & Sons Beech Grove Chapel. Funeral Mass is Thursday, March 25 at 11 a.m. at Holy Name Catholic Church, of which he was a member. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Roy A. Houchins, 70, of Indianapolis, died March 6, 2010. He was born May 22, 1939, and was preceded in death by his parents, sister Kay and his daughter, Brenda Ellen Houchins. Surviving him is his wife, Ginger, children Jack Houchins, Angie (Dave) Pfeiffer, Chris Houchins, Phil Houchins, Robert Bryant, Kristi (Rick) Wright, 12 grand children and 15 great-grandchildren.  He was a Union carpenter/BA for over 30 years. He also served as a deputy sheriff for 12 years before being elected to serve as Perry Township Constable in 2004. He also served as the director of the Indiana Constables Association. Burial was held March 13, 2010 at Forest Lawn Funeral Home.




Art Potter: Plane crash is south side’s loss

Arthur S. Potter was a friend to many in Greenwood and the Southside.

The 67-year-old entrepreneur died in a plane crash in Ohio with one of his friends Friday of last week.

Potter’s small plane had left Greenwood Municipal Airport that morning. It was found crumpled in a field 12 hours later near Marysville, Ohio. Potter and Frank Granato, 55, of Carmel, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Visitation and services were not announced before this week’s deadline.

He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Sally Ann; children, Deborah E., Laura M., Stephen W. Earl and Christa Earl Phelps; grandchildren, Michael, Emily, Anne and Charles; great-grandchildren, Michael and Haiden; brother, Robert Earl; and sisters, Velma Lee and Jennie Robertson. Burial was held March 10 at Shirley Brothers Thompson Road Chapel.
