CGHS Student qualifies for State Science Fair

Published April 1st, 2010

Victoria Sluka, a sophomore at Center Grove High School, was awarded first place in the 10th grade division for her project on facial recognition software at the 2010 Central Indiana Regional Science and Engineering Fair. She came in second place overall in the Biology division, and fourth place, qualifying her for the state science fair. The top six places from each region will compete at the Hoosier Science and Engineering Fair at IUPUI.

Sluka was awarded a Pocket PC from DJ Angus Scientech Educational Foundation, Inc. CGHS Teacher Trina Veerkamp, as Sluka’s teacher of record, also received an Award of Merit and a cash prize.

Sluka’s science project was on facial recognition.  She cut up photos of the faces of famous people and asked subjects to identify them using sections of the pictures featuring eyes only, nose only, and then both.  She learned that facial recognition software could only recognize 50-85 percent of people using cues, so she was trying to determine what might make the software better, and on which facial features to focus.  With more than 830 data points, Sluka found that more people could recognize faces from photos of the eyes, and the numbers were even better using the eyes and nose together, while the nose alone was not as recognizable.
