Brenton named 2010 Alumnus of the Year

The Beech Grove High School Alumni Association will honor Max Brenton as the 2010 Alumnus of the Year on June 12. This will be a part of the 34th Annual Celebration Reunion Dinner held at the Atrium. To obtain tickets please contact Barbara O’Neill Simmermann at (317) 881-1537.
Brenton is a part of the Class of 1964 and has dedicated over 20 years to the Indianapolis Police Department. He became the Security Administrator with Boehringer Mannheim Corporation. This year he was also honored with being named President of the International Security Managers Association (ISMA).
Brenton currently resides in Franklin Township with his wife Rebecca (Wheatley) Brenton, where they reared their children, Jared and Rachele.


Harry E. Wood High School 50th reunion

The 1960 graduation class of Harry E. Wood High School will hold a 50-year reunion and is seeking contact information for classmates.
Plans are to hold a Miracle Mile Parade on S. Madison Avenue on September 4 for all 60 graduates. The parade is from noon – 2 p.m. If you have cars of the period please bring them decorated to accompany a float decorated with a Wood High School banner. Dinner that evening will be held at Jonathan Byrd’s Banquet Hall in Greenwood, IN from 6 to 10 p.m. Cost is $30 per person and must be submitted no later than June 15.

MENC and Music for All Form Strategic Partnership

Music for All (MFA) and MENC: The National Association for Music Education have formed an alliance for educational and professional development. The organizations will be working together to use new and existing programs of both organizations to make a national significance to music education. “Our nation, and music education, is in a time of change, and we must advocate for music education through imagination and creativity,” says Barbara Geer, President of MENC.

Local cadet graduates from West Point

Cadet Edwin Mobley, son of David and Nancy Mobley of Beech Grove, graduated from the U.S. Military Academy on May 22.
Mobley graduated from Beech Grove High School in 2006. While at West Point, he concentrated his studies in economics. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army within the Aviation branch and will report to Fort Rucker, Alabama, for his first assignment.
Family and friends are welcome attend an open house in his honor on June 13 from 1 – 5 p.m. at Hornet Park Community Center. Richard Lugar and Andre Carson will make an appearance.


KeyBank closes branch for community service

Nearly 8,200 employees of KeyCorp nationwide participated in the company’s 20th annual “Neighbors Make the Difference Day” on May 25. Key staff spent the afternoon volunteering for a wide array of community service projects in neighborhoods across the nation. Two-thirds of Key branches were closed for the event.

Doing the “pretend like you’re icing a cake in the air” wave makes sore arms and impressive biceps. And the cheekbone-challenging smile can never stop. Roncalli Baccalaureate for the Class of 2010

Roncalli High School’s Baccalaureate for the Class of 2010 took place May 28 at Our Lady of the Greenwood Church. Major awards and winners include: Bernie Dever Award, Jimmy Eckhart; Spirit of Roncalli, Lauren Ezell and C.J. Allard; and the Pope John XXIII Award, Brian Sahm, Kayla Weisenbach, Katie Groves and Evan Swhear.


Indiana Fallen Police Officer Blood Drive

The 4th annual Indiana Fallen Police Officer Blood Drive pays tribute to all of Indiana’s fallen police officers by listing their names on a poster during the blood drive. Last year there were 130 blood drives, with at least one in all of Indiana’s 92 counties. Donors must be at least 17 years of age, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and be in good health. Proof of identification will be required. A blood drive honoring Beech Grove Police Department’s Fallen Officers will be held on June 12 from 2:30 – 5 p.m. at the Beech Grove Moose Lodge, 3320 S. Emerson Ave.
This blood drive will be remembering and honoring Deputy of Police, Richard D. Ferguson, Lieutenant, Tomas L. Kleis, and Police Officer, William (Bill) Ronald Toney.


Meals for pets

The Humane Society of Johnson County (HSJC) and Molly’s Meals have joined together to offer short-term food assistance for pets if owners become disabled, unemployed, are elderly on a fixed income, or experience a tragedy such as a house fire, flood, death in the family or hospitalization. Pet food can be picked up at the Humane Society Pet Center Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1 – 4:30 p.m.
Molly’s Meals, a meals on wheels program for pets, is the only program of its type in Indiana that delivers for the home-bound in Johnson County. To receive assistance from Molly’s Meals, call (317) 859-6837. If you or someone you know is having difficulty affording food for pets, please contact the Humane Society of Johnson County, 3827 N. Graham Rd., Franklin, (317) 535-6626 for assistance.


Aaah, summer Get ready to read

Beech Grove Public Library and Indianapolis-Marion County Public Libraries:
The Beech Grove Public Library and every branch of the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library (IMCPL) are teeming up to use their summer reading program to donate food and money to those in need. “Read for a Need” is the name of the Beech Grove Public Library’s summer reading program and “Read to Feed: Mind and Heart” is the theme for all IMCPL branches. Individuals of all ages will be able to earn points to exchange for prizes, but will also be able to donate non-perishable food items to Gleaners Food Bank to earn 20 points. Readers may also donate 20 of their summer reading points so that grocery partner Kroger Company will make a contribution on their behalf. Prizes will include an assortment of toys, a Royal Pin Fun package, a Family Fun Pass to the Marion County Fair, and more. Registration for this event should be made at the main desk of any patrticipating library.
