Sweet but deadly: Dogs and chewing gum don’t mix

The Cox family came home one day to find their family dog, Copper, had collapsed. Copper was a 5-year-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

“He was limp when we took him to the vet,” Derek Cox said. He, his wife Renee and their children had no idea why Copper had suddenly become so ill.

Johnson County Humane Society’s 10th Annual Paw Pounder

The Humane Society of Johnson County had its 10th annual Paw Pounder fundraiser Saturday, Oct. 11, at Craig Park in Greenwood. It was sponsored by Greenwood Parks and Recreation, Pet Supplies Plus and Indy Tails. At the Pet Supplies Plus booth, pet owners could weigh their dogs and receive their weights in dog wash coupons. Other vendors included Greenwood Animal Clinic, Auntie Leila’s Pet Salon & Barkery, Country Bound Pet Resort, Specks Pet Supply and multiple pet rescue organizations.

Exotic pets may lead to illness

In some cases, exposing your children to the joys of exotic pet ownership may also mean exposing them to infections and injuries.

Exotic pets like rodents, reptiles and monkeys can carry disease. Parents need to be aware of the dangers — including salmonella infection and even monkey pox — of owning such nontraditional pets as rodents, reptiles, monkeys and more, says a report from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) published in the October issue of the medical journal Pediatrics.

The difference between life and death

Humans have a bewildering array of types of insurance available. Health insurance, life insurance, car insurance, homeowner’s insurance… but do you have pet insurance? Pet insurance is a relatively new phenomenon which arose from the strengthening of the human-animal bond in our society. We are no longer a primarily rural society where animals are viewed only as food, revenue sources or guards for other revenue sources. Many people view their pets as family members. Now, your teenagers might not be the only family members wearing braces, but the family dog may be, too.
