UIndy announces campaign for new recreation facility

The University of Indianapolis has launched a capital campaign for a proposed 103,000-square-foot Student Athletics & Recreation Center, which will provide much-needed space for sports teams and related academic programs as well as fitness facilities for the entire campus community.

Woman donates 43 gallons of pop tabs

The McDonald’s located at 2252 U.S. 31 hosted its third annual 5K walk and run to help support the Ronald McDonald House Charities. A special individual made a contribution in her own way. Lisa Duke donated 43 gallons of pop tabs to Ronald McDonald for the Ronald McDonald House. Duke, 47, attends Gateway Services and works at NSK Precision America in Franklin. Duke started collecting pop tabs at work and then acquired help from her family and church. The Ronald McDonald House has collected pop tabs for over 15 years to help raise funds to support the house.

Walking for a cause

On Sunday, more than 350 people enjoyed the fall weather by participating in the fifth annual Jack’s Walk for Autism at Province Park in Franklin. The walk benefits area children affected by autism by funding grants and therapy.

Southport Presbyterian celebrates 175 years

A historical marker at the Madison Avenue entrance to Greenwood Park Mall commemorates an early location of Southport Presbyterian Church — part of the history its members are celebrating this year as the church marks its 175th anniversary.

Southport Presbyterian Church (SPC) was officially organized in 1833 by a group of settlers from Mercer County, Ky. They named the new church after the one they had left back in Kentucky — the New Providence Presbyterian Church.

Hornet Park’s Health Fair to offer screenings, advice

This Saturday, the Hornet Park Community Center will host a Health Fair from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Visitors to the center will be able to receive $20 flu shots from At Home Care Services (free to those with Medicare or Medicaid), free blood pressure screenings from Beech Grove Meadows, free blood glucose screenings from CVS, free vision and hearing screenings from the Lion’s Club and $10 cholesterol screenings from Walgreens. Indiana Blood Center will be on site seeking eligible donors.

John Heck of Indianapolis always dreamed of finding the time and the money to race. The self-employed automotive repair shop owner loves to work on cars and now thanks to the Hoosier Lottery, will be able to race a few cars himself.

“It’s time to go racing hard!” said Heck.

Locals lined up before 6 a.m on September 12 for the reopening of the newly renovated McDonalds at the corner of Raymond and Sherman. They were greeted by McDonalds co-owners Roy Stuckey and Jim Props, who gave the first 50 patrons a card for a free Big Mac every week for one year. Also greeting customers was Beech Grove mayor Joe Wright.

Roncalli (0-0) at Southport (0-0) August 22 7 p.m.

The 2008 High School Football season on the Southside will officially get underway this Friday night. For our first ”Game of the Week” feature of 2008, we have the Southport Cardinals hosting the Roncalli Rebels. Perennial powerhouse Roncalli will start the 2008 season on the road with 21 seniors leading the way. Although the underclassmen will have to contribute significantly for Coach Bruce Scifres, the Rebels will rely on senior leadership and experience to regain the program’s former state-championship glory.

Coach Bill Peebles and the Cardinals will begin this year’s campaign at home. They hope to get off to a big start with an upset over Roncalli. Southport will return 18 starters from the 2007 squad. This clash on the Southside will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday night in Perry Stadium.

Greenwood takes first step to annex ‘islands’

Three Greenwood residents questioned Greenwood City Council Monday as to why their property would be annexed into the city.

First readings of eight ordinances involved annexing islands of land — 787 total acres. The city has grown around the unincorporated properties. About a third of the unincorporated areas is residential.
The annexation issue produced a lot of discussion among the residents, Mayor Charles Henderson, Planning Director Ed Ferguson and council members.
