Clinton Young School of International Learning has gone high-tech with classroom education. SMART Technologies Inc. introduced the first SMART Board whiteboard in 1991. With a computer image projected on the board, students can simply use their finger or specialized pens to do a lesson on any subject matter. This technology assists in making whole classroom learning much more interactive.

“This technology has been in place, but was not consistently utilized as an instructional tool until just recently,” Matthew Willey, Technology Coordinator in the Perry Township School District said. “Under the leadership of Dr. Frank Giles, Director of Technology, there has been more attention paid to what national educators were saying about how students approached learning differently in the 21st century.” He went on to say that providing the teachers with the proper tools and training has accelerated since the township has partnered with SMART Ed Services.

Jennifer Marion, the SMART Ed representative, has spent countless hours visiting the schools and setting up training sessions. “The result has been amazing,” said Willey. Clinton Young has been fortunate to reap the real benefits of this technology as every classroom in the building is furnished with a SMART Board. CY principal Alicia Ramsey said, “We’ve already seen positive effects.

The teachers are not intimidated with this technology and the kids think it is really cool. Even our support staff has asked for some training. Education has evolved from chalkboards, to white marker boards, and now to the SMART Boards, and Clinton Young has been able to take advantage of this technological advancement.” CY teacher John Sponsel started hyping up with the SMART Boards during the 2007-2008 school year. “The SMART Boards have provided the students with an opportunity to become more interactive in their daily lessons and it also allows the students to grasp more information in the assignments to personalize their education as needed,” he said. Professional development training sessions will continue for the staff throughout the school year.
