Vernon “Jim” James Alexander, 75, Indianapolis, died Dec. 3, 2012. He was born on Sept. 9, 1937 in Indianapolis, to Vernon and Edna Alexander. He served his country as a member of the United States Marine Corp and retired from Ford Motor Company after 50 years of service. He was a member of Englewood Masonic Lodge No. 715 since 1970. He is survived by his siblings, Shirley, Phyllis, Beverly, Darlene, Joann, Donna, Howard, John and Ron; daughter, Samantha (Gary Porter) Parr; grandchildren, Joshua (Amy) Parr, Jacqueline (Eric) Baldwin; three great-grandchildren, Aleesha, Darien and Shyla Baldwin and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Sandra Katherine Alexander and one step-son, Rocky Damon Reynolds. Visitation will be held Dec. 6, from 4 – 8 p.m. at G. H. Herrmann Madison Avenue Funeral Home, 5141 Madison Ave. Indianapolis. Funeral Service will be conducted in the funeral home on Dec. 7, at 1 p.m. He will be laid to rest at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.

 

Laura Effie Buchanan Brown, Greenwood, died Nov. 28, 2012.  She was born June 29, 1932, in Richland County, Ill. to the late Laura Buchanan Brock-Jones.  She grew up in Casey, Ill., graduated from Casey High School in 1950 and graduated magna cum laude from Indiana Central College in 1954, with a BA in English. She married Keith Brown, on Dec. 19, 1953. She taught IPS for two years and Perry Township Junior High for one year. She earned her Masters from Butler University, and returned to Perry Township in 1973 as Media Specialist at Perry Meridian High School. In 1977, she transferred to Meridian Middle School as Media Director until her retirement in 1992. She is survived by her husband Keith; children Derek (Debbie) Brown of Galena, Kevin (Charlene) Brown and David Brown of Indianapolis, Lisa (Albert) Andreas of Ft. Wayne; grandchildren, Laurann Rodriguez, Cara, Kelly, and Kacey Brown, and Steven Andreas; great-grandson, Diego Rodriguez; and half-brother, Terry Brock-Jones. Services were held Dec. 1 at Singleton Community Mortuary and Memorial Center, with the burial in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens. Memorial gifts have been suggested to RHUMC, UIndy (Brown Scholarship Fund), or GVS (Library Fund).

 

Howard L. Burnell, 79, Indianapolis, died Nov. 30, 2012. He was born on July 13, 1933 in Indianapolis, to Effen and Alvera Burnell. He was a deacon and a faithful member of Mount Zion General Baptist Church. He was a member of the Marion County Veteran’s Burial Team. Survivors include his children, Herbert Burnell, Theresa Bagan, Walter Burnell and Heidi Dixon; grandchildren, Shannon, Stephanie, Vincent, Shawn, Christopher and Holly; six great-grandchildren and sister, Betty Abel. He is preceded in death by his wife, Rita Burnell. Funeral service was held Dec. 4 at G.H. Herrmann Madison Avenue Funeral Home, with the burial in Floral Park Cemetery.

 

Fred C. Embree III, 70, Indianapolis, died Nov. 28, 2012. He worked in the tool and die trade for 52 years; working for Sheet Metal Models for the last 21 years.  He had a passion for muscle, drag and stock cars all his life. Over the years, he and his son built engines, restored cars and won many awards while traveling state to state. He was a member of Beech Grove Masonic Lodge No. 694 F & AM. Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Sue; son, Chris Embree; brother, Gary Embree; and sister, Elaine Combs. Funeral services were held Dec. 3 at G.H. Herrmann Madison Avenue Funeral Home, with the burial in Washington Park East Cemetery.

 

Roberta Lucille Haddix, 55, Indianapolis, died Nov. 26, 2012.  She was born on Sept. 14, 1957 in Xenia, Ohio.  She was a homemaker and former manager at Church’s Chicken. She was a member of the H.O.G. Group and Garfield Park Church of God. Survivors include her daughter, Sarah Freeman (Robert); son, Nick Haddix; step-sons, Rodney and Zackary Haddix; sister, Martha Haddix (Mark); brothers, Robert (Debbie), Henry (Charlene) and Robin (Teresa) King; and many grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father, Robert King. A memorial service was held Dec. 2 at Garfield Park Church of God. Arrangements and care were made by Lauck & Veldhof Funeral & Cremation Services.

 

JoAnn D. Hooper, 84, Indianapolis, died Dec. 3, 2012. She was born June 27,1928 in Indianapolis, to James and Mary Anna Schaller Hooper. Visitation will be Dec. 6, from 5 – 8 p.m. at G. H. Herrmann Madison Avenue Funeral Home, 5141 Madison Ave., Indianapolis.  Funeral Service will be conducted on Dec. 7 at 11:30 am. She will be laid to rest at Carmel Cemetery.  Memorial contributions may be made to American Heart Association.

 

Michael Wheldon Landrum, 42, Indianapolis, died Nov. 22, 2012.  He was born to the late Franklin D. Roosevelt Landrum and Rosalena Copley Landrum on Nov. 13, 1970 in Indianapolis. He was the owner of Landrum Tree Service, which he always claimed was “going Nationwide.” Survivors include his daughters, Merranda Landrum (Dallas Joe Brown) and Mariah Landrum; sisters, Scherry Naquin (Brian), Cindy Walters (Robert), Tina Barkley (David) and Shelly Cline (John); grandson, Hunter Michael Joe Brown. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Lance Landrum; and one sister, Pam Landrum.  Funeral services took place on Nov. 29 in Lauck & Veldhof Funeral & Cremation Services.

 

Raymond Cleo Livingston, 84, Indianapolis, died Dec. 3, 2012. He was born on May 31, 1928 in Indianapolis, to the late Templeton and Eva I. Livingston.  He had worked several years as an auctioneer. He is survived by stepson, Edward Whitaker; sister, Elnora Hicks; brothers, Joe and Richard Livingston, and Phil McCarty; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. A graveside service will take place on Dec. 6 at New Crown Cemetery, 2101 Churchman Ave, Indianapolis. Arrangements have been entrusted to G.H. Herrmann East Street Funeral Home.

 

Walter “Doug” C. Johnson, 68, Indianapolis, died Nov. 27, 2012.  He was born June 21, 1944 in Kentucky. He is survived by his wife, Mary (Hardman) Johnson; mother, Clara (Haleman) Hardman; children, Walter Johnson, Jr., Toyanne Blanchard, Diane Graham, Tina Adams and Angela Glass; siblings, Donald Marr, Samuel Marr and Mary Suiters; 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his father, Paul Johnson. Services were held Dec. 5 at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service & Crematory, Chapel of the Chimes, with the burial in Washington Park East Cemetery.

 

Merrill Rivers, 78, Indianapolis, died Dec. 2, 2012.  He was born Oct. 9, 1934 in Judson, Ind., to the late Clifford and Mary Jane Rivers.  He worked in the composing room with several newspapers and retired from the Indianapolis Star after more than 30 years of service.  He was a member of the Montezuma Masonic Lodge for more than 50 years, the Low 12 Club, and the Typographical Union. He is survived by his wife, Joan Rivers; children, Jon Rivers; grandchildren, Melanie and Kevin; great-granddaughter, Adrianna; and siblings, Vera White, Louise Booe, Janice Hall, and Herschel Rivers. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a great grandson, Micah. No services are scheduled at this time and burial will be at a later date at Memory Garden in Rockville, Ind. In memory of Merrill, memorial contributions may be made to the any Humane Society.

 

Mark Joseph Welch, 51, Darlington, formerly of Indianapolis, died Nov. 26, 2012. He was born in Indianapolis on Nov. 23, 1961 to the late Harold E. Welch and Mary Lou (Beechler) Welch Phelps. Survivors include his companion, Annett Elliott; sons, Mark Joseph (Clara Caudill) Welch, Jr., Raymond Eugene Welch and Wayne Allan Nalley; brothers, Dale, Danny (Ruby), David Allen, and Michael Wayne Welch; sisters, Marilyn(Marvin) Morris, Carolyn Roberts, Darleen(Tim) Harrell, Marsha Welch and Linda Smith; and three grandchildren. Services were held on Dec. 4 at Fountain Square Mortuary, with the burial in Union Chapel Cemetery.

 

Mary Patricia Comado West, 77, Indianapolis, died Nov.28, 2012.  She was born on April 20, 1935 in Indianapolis to the late Theresa and Sam Comado. She was the wife of Donald West for 49 years, until his death. She was a 1953 graduate of Sacred Heart High School. She retired from the Social Security Administration in 1995 and then worked part time in Customer Service at Parisian Department Store until 2008. She is survived by her daughter, Maryrose West; granddaughter, Jennifer (Jeff) Russell; great grandchildren, Aiden and Ethan; brothers, Salvatore (Dagnija) and Michael (Phyllis) Comado; sisters, Josephine (Patrick) Henn, Margaret (Bill) Thornberry, Rosemarie (Michael) Paugh; many nieces and nephews; and her beloved dogs, Mocha and Missy. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Dec. 1 at St. Barnabas Catholic Church, with the burial in St. Joseph Cemetery.
