Opening the diabetes discussion

Published July 22nd, 2011

Dear Reader,

Last week’s column, written by Wendell Fowler, caused quite the uproar within diabetes circles. To those who were offended, we apologize.  Wendell’s column reflects his own opinion and is intended to shed light on being healthy.  He and several other writers who provide food for thought in this community newspaper each week have the right to express their own opinions.   It appeared that several reader comments made last week about Wendell’s column were based on the misunderstanding that he was discussing Type 1 diabetes.
As you will note in today’s newspaper, Wendell clarifies for readers that his intention was only to discuss type 2.  I am not, nor is any of the staff here, considered to be medical authority. However, we all understand that a correlation can easily be made between obesity and a sedentary life style, regarding several diseases, not just diabetes.

We should all be concerned about the growing rate of obesity in this country and especially here in Indiana.
In coming issues, we hope to address the very passionate interest in this disease by providing information and a forum for readers to respectfully discuss different opinions.  Along with national organizations, local groups do their part, too, to support those who live with diabetes. For example, area Fraternal Order of Eagles raise funds for the American Diabetes Association and are to be commended for their efforts.  Our only interest is with an informational dialog on this subject.

I cannot believe you deleted all the comments to these articles. What a slap in the face of the diabetic community… what an insult.

I suggest you find a way to stop delivering this to my home or I will be forced to stop using any of your advertisers and let them know that I won’t contribute to anyone paying Wendell Fowler one cent.

Suggestion: Please have your writers consult with medical professionals before getting into medical talk. In this case, a Registered Dietitian or an endocrinologist would have been most appropriate. You are misinforming many people, and I thought journalists are supposed to do background work before they publish? The Junvenile Diabetes Foundation in which Mr. Fowler criticized is an organization for type 1 diabetes. He made serious errors, and he really should retract instead of exerting yet more pride in his “explanation.” We should expect more from your organization of writers that you allow to post in the name of Southwest Times.

[...] There are some half-hearted, back-pedaling nonsense follow up articles here and here. [...]

I see you removed the original article. You also need to remove the the “Trying to find common ground” article.

Also your statement “Wendell’s column reflects his own opinion” is misleading at best. The article addressed several facts that Mr Fowler was totally incorrect about. He has no idea what he is talking about when it comes to Diabetes.

I hope in the future your paper does not publish any medical related columns. You don’t have the journalistic integrity to fact check columns you publish. When you do this with medical information you have the potential to hurt many people.

this particular reporter is an absolute disgrace and as a journalist should of checked his facts before posting the article you know like good ones are supposed too… and you should take a good long look in the mirror and ask yourself how you can let your employee discriminate against every type 1, but in particular young children who are already growing up with a serious life long illness, and perpetuate the myths surrounding this disease which by the way is absolutely not our fault in any way
