A new senior living concept
Healthy, older adults have a new living option available to them in Perry Township. Emerson House is a family living concept for seniors developed by faith-based Indianapolis Senior Living and owned by Paul and Kathy Brakke. 
Paul says, “Most senior living options are very much alike and relatively large. We were convinced that there was a place in the market for a resident community that was small and home-like.” The Brakkes worked with an architect to create a large, one-level, single family home with 14 bedrooms and 14 bathrooms. The bathrooms are equipped with handrails and higher-than-average toilets. The kitchen and other living areas like a game room and two patios are shared. The Brakkes live in the home as well.
Meals will be based on resident’s needs and tastes, paying special attention to diabetic and cardiac menus. “Kathy enjoys cooking and has several years experience operating a school hot lunch program serving over 60 meals a day, so is able to prepare tasty and nutritious meals,” says Paul.
“Finding a business we could run together was something we had looked at, off and on, for 10 to 15 years. We looked at several, but none were a good match for us. Our backgrounds are assisted living and business development, so it became apparent that developing a new option in senior housing would be a natural combination of our skills,” Paul explained.
The new concept came about because he believes, “Even though there is a tendency to stereotype the older as a sickly group, the fact is that many are healthy and capable, desiring more activity and social interaction. Our mobile society has separated many of these individuals from their children who, in past decades, might have provided housing for parents or other relatives.”
The home is located on Emerson Avenue, south of Shelbyville Road. It is aimed at the needs of older residents who desire companionship and transportation. “It’s like the friendly atmosphere of the old-time boarding houses,” Kathy said. “We have worked on this project for four years, with the Lord’s blessing.”
