University of Indianapolis instructor Toni Peabody has been honored by the state chapter of the National Association of Social Workers for her contributions to the field. Peabody, who will retire this year as coordinator of field experiences for UIndy’s Phylis Lan Lin Program in Social Work, has received the association’s 2010 Social Worker of the Year Award for Region 7, which includes Marion and surrounding counties. She began teaching at the university in 1987 and became a full-time faculty member in 1996.
In nominating Peabody, colleagues cited her energy, enthusiasm and personal commitment to volunteer work as well as her history of mentoring students and graduates and organizing service-learning partnerships between the university and various community organizations.
Her accomplishments at UIndy have included developing and overseeing the ongoing Laurelwood Project, in which UIndy faculty and students work with underprivileged children in the southside Laurelwood Apartments complex. She developed another service-learning partnership with Fletcher Place Community Center and helped organize the First International Symposium on Service-Learning in 2005 in collaboration with South Africa’s Stellenbosch University. She also chaired UIndy’s campus United Way campaign for 12 years.
The Social Worker of the Year award was presented March 25 at the local NASW Social Work Month dinner in Indianapolis.
Peabody holds a bachelor’s degree in social work from Ball State University and a master’s degree in social work from Indiana University.
