Last minute legislative action will likely require date change for CGCSC general fund referendum

Published March 25th, 2010

The Center Grove Community School Corporation Board of School Trustees accepted a recommendation from the General Fund Referendum Committee and adopted a resolution to hold a special election on July 13, 2010 for a general fund referendum. However, school officials discovered March 18 that the final text of House Bill 1086 included an item that will affect the referendum process.

Section 98 of the Act modifies the general fund referendum process, including a requirement that any public question on the matter be held on the first Tuesday in either May or November. This Section of the Act will take effect immediately upon receiving the Governor’s signature, anticipated to occur sometime within the next week.

Upon this Section of the Act becoming law, the Center Grove Community School Corporation will be required to wait until November 2, 2010 before the community can vote on the General Fund Referendum question. With this new information, the election board is expected to schedule the ballot question for the general fund referendum on the November election date.
