Ask your mother, and she’d probably say it was one of your favorite words. From the time you were old enough to talk, she heard it plenty enough: “Mine!”
Everything was yours. If it belonged to someone else, it was yours. Even if you didn’t want it, it was yours.
You eventually grew out of that (more or less), but though your grown-up sensibilities recognize that possessions are just things, you still protect them. Read the rest of this entry »
Be careful opening the door on Halloween night if you see someone standing there wearing a straw hat and gardening clogs, holding a garden hoe. It just might be your neighborhood gardening geek.
It’s easy to recognize these avid gardeners. Their favorite trick-or-treaters are the little ones dressed like lady bugs, bees, sunflowers, daisies and garden fairies, and they always give them extra treats. Upon their porches are a dozen pumpkins grown in their own gardens from a dollar’s worth of seeds. And though they do give out candy on Halloween, they would really like to give out tulip bulbs with planting instructions to all the trick-or-treaters. Read the rest of this entry »
Beech Grove citizens undoubtedly have become accustomed to seeing the orange and white “Vote YES” signs popping up on lawns throughout the city. On Nov. 3, participating voters will vote in a referendum that will decide whether Beech Grove City Schools can continue operating at last year’s budget. If it fails, Beech Grove will be operating with $1.5 million less than last year — and no transportation.
Beech Grove doesn’t have enough commercial properties to support the school district after the property-tax cap. The city is unique: Proximity to downtown Indianapolis and the Greenwood area means there is no demand for a large shopping center or similar economic development. For example, Greenwood Community Schools would be unlikely to have such a problem because of the Greenwood Park Mall. Population-wise, the school system is smaller than that of full township schools, where massive budgets can eke out million-dollar cuts. Read the rest of this entry »
As the winds get chillier, the opportunity arises to wear more and more clothes and accessories. In the heat of the summer, sweaters, hats, chunky scarves and gloves aren’t even on the radar. But now, a graphic tee, shorts and sandals can be turned into a graphic tee, a V-neck, a vest, a jacket, leggings, a skirt, legwarmers, boots, an extra-long knit scarf, a beanie and gloves. All in one outfit!
I love to stock up on V-neck sweaters, cardigans and vests. They’re super versatile and look great over a graphic tee and a beat-up pair of jeans. Graphic tees are still important, because too many solid colors can get boring, even if you have on eight layers. Colored tights (patterns can get distorted and be unflattering, so go for solids most of the time) are a great accessory, along with all the cute hats that are available this time of year. Scrimp where you can, and splurge on something classic and high-quality, like a good pair of Frye boots.
Hey gang, here at The Southside Times, the bosses upstairs only pull me out of the back room and away from my production and Web duties a handful of times a year. This happens if we review copious amounts of food, i.e. “The Best Donut on the Southside” issue or to write something up for Halloween. Well, guess what? The hour of the witch is upon us. There is a chill in the air, and the sweet smell of wet leaves and slightly rotting pumpkins permeates the nostrils. My favorite time of the year. And being the office’s resident fan of the fright flick, I give you my Ten Favorite Horror Movies.

Tucked away in beautiful German Park is a little known German restaurant sure to take many people back to their German roots. (Or at least make you pretend to have some German in you.)
Many people don’t think of bratwurst or schnitzel when they’re trying to decide on what to have for dinner, and my only question for these people is, “Why on Earth not?!” The meals are hearty and filling, and you can’t beat the Wednesday night buffet. Read the rest of this entry »

As the eerie annual adulation to the sugar gods draws neigh, please seize a moment to mull over what occurs to your ghastly, ghostly bedecked youngster’s exquisite inner ecosystem when sugar enters their young blood stream.
There are myriad sage truths some good folks would prefer to simply go away — the ignorance is bliss attitude to life. For the sake of our loved ones, however, there are profundities which shouldn’t be sugar-coated. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition warns sugar stifles the immune system and impairs your defenses against spooky infectious diseases such as H1N1. Read the rest of this entry »

File Photo: Monday’s meeting was not the first time Thoman has been under fire. Photo by Mike Alexander | The Southside Times
The battle line has been drawn between the five-member Southport City Council and the mayor.
First term Mayor Rob Thoman said “No” to the council’s request to resign Monday. His apparent transgressions appear to be the discontinuance of public prayer at meetings and not being able to provide the council specific budget information.
However, a new wrinkle cropped at Monday’s meeting before a crowd of about 120 when the mayor was asked about his arrest as a college student in 1981 on charges of theft, embezzlement and intimidation while student government president at the University of Colorado.
The mayor said all charges later were dismissed. Read the rest of this entry »
