Fill your brown bags with wholesome lunches

Published August 20th, 2009

Psssssst! Hey Mom And Dad. Can we chat? Kid’s dietary needs are the same as they were 20 years ago; however, the food they eat is not. Today’s pseudo food options aren’t even close to being healthy. I submit Lunchables as an example. Alluringly marketed, this Antichrist of nourishment is laden with an un-Godly amount of salt, HFCS, caustic synthesized fats, food colorings, nitrates and immune-depleting sugar. [ad#single-post] Kids need up to 40 vitamins a day to grow mentally and physically. To achieve this goal, kids need a variety of fresh, chemical-free food in its natural, cosmic wrapping. Today’s short-cut foods are nutritionally D.O.A., a result of industrial modification. Man assumes he can improve on the work of the universe, but it’s simply not going to occur. What precious little bodies need is freshly made whole foods prepared with loving energy, love being the key element. Vulnerable bodies require quality materials to grow big and strong with alert minds ready to absorb their education. Like adding an edition to your home, if inferior materials are used, the room will be structurally weak. Find the time for preparing wholesome, balanced lunches, or find time for illness. Before packing colorful lunch boxes or brown bags with whatever is cheap and convenient, thoughtfully consider the contents. Are your choices based on convenience because of your busy day? Are they based on what you ate as a kid? Or are they based on their needs? In order to aid, not impede, your offspring’s development, it makes sense for all loving parental units to update their own nutritional savvy. I’ve overheard parents lament preparing a healthy lunch took up too much of their time. Well, boo-hoo. Not good enough, bucko! One child told me recently her parents give them a Pop Tart and a can of Mountain Dew, kissed them goodbye and hastened them to the bus stop. The question begs, whose fault is it that parents today will outlive their children? The CDC estimates 1 in 200 children in America under 18 avoid meats. Vegetarians say its animal welfare, not health, that most often causes kids to stop eating meat, thanks in part to YouTube animal slaughter videos which shock the developing sensibilities of many U.S. children. Kids raised on a vegetarian diet lower their risk of obesity, cancer, heart disease. If you don’t want to cut meat all altogether, at the least, cut back. Use a Thermos for fall and winter hearty vegetable and bean soups. Make a garden salad or whole grain pasta salad with vegetables mixed, walnuts and last night’s chicken breast, shredded. Pack a low-cal dressing separate and let them add it in. Nutritionists push kids to eat more fruits and vegetables, of course. For growing children, however, it’s also essential to get sufficient amounts of protein, vitamins B12 and D3, iron, calcium and other important nutrients that most people get from meat, eggs and dairy. Most of all, give your child a multivitamin/mineral supplement if they are picky eaters. Need advice on what to prepare? Your kids love you. Love them back by practicing healthful eating behaviors. They want and need boundaries. Be a good role model.
