Laptop security: Think beyond the dorm room

Published July 23rd, 2009

(ARA) – There are more laptops on college campuses today than ever before, which has caused increased temptation for laptop theft.
College students should follow these tips to help prevent laptop theft:

1 When working in a public place, like a coffee shop or library, do not leave your laptop unattended.

2 Leaving your laptop out on your dorm room desk is an invitation to thieves. Many dorm rooms have a constant flow of traffic going in and out, without anyone really paying attention to their belongings.

3 Do not use the telltale laptop bag or sleeve.

4 Even if you are discreet and constantly aware of your laptop’s location, use a tracking and recovery program in case of theft.

Honey, ‘dew’ you eat melon?

Published July 23rd, 2009

Melons stimulate encores of red-gingham childhood memories of icy cold melons, seed-spitting contests and family picnics. “Don’t swallow the seeds or a melon will grow in your belly” — a terrifying notion for a naive pre-teen.

One steamy summer’s day, Sandi and I were traveling about southern Indiana. Submitting to hunger and thirst, we stopped at a family’s roadside farmer’s market instantly seduced by pyramids of ripe, fragrant melons. The amply endowed young lady running the stand wore a skimpy halter top. As Sandi and I strolled through the open-air market, I unthinkingly blurted, “Wow, what gorgeous melons, miss.” Slap! It happened so fast. Blushing like a Brandywine, I recovered my bruised dignity from the dirt floor. In my defense, she was asking for it. The trip home was a brutally quiet. The next day I enrolled in Johnny Cougar’s Melon Camp for the Faux-Pas Challenged.

Planning a baby?

Published July 23rd, 2009

When couples begin trying to get pregnant, generally women are more concerned about the condition of their bodies than the would-be daddies. But if conception is your goal, Dad may need a weight-loss plan first. Heavy men produce less semen and have more sperm abnormalities, both of which lower the odds of conceiving.

Sunscreen pill

Published July 23rd, 2009

Aside from daily use of a broad-spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen, boost your UV protection by taking an antioxidant supplement such as Heliocare ($63 for 60; heliocare.com) or SunPill ($20 for 30; sunpill.com). New research from the University of Miami School of Medicine shows that the fern extract in these pills significantly reduced UVA-related DNA damage that leads to wrinkling and brown spots. For best results, pop one each day starting a week before you plan on fun in the sun. “This allows the antioxidants to build up in your system for maximum protection,” says Leslie Baumann, MD, director of the University of Miami Cosmetic Medicine and Research Institute.
