Obituaries for the week of 04.23.09
Marion “Digger” O’Dell, 78, of Indianapolis, died April 16, 2009. He was born February 17, 1931, in Indianapolis to the late Wendell and Edna O’Dell. He was a veteran of the U.S. military. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Delores O’Dell; daughter, Linda Robinson; sons, Gary and Keith O’Dell; sister, Shirley Burnworth; 11 grandchildren; and 8 great grandchildren. Two brothers, Thomas and Boyd “Bud” O’Dell, preceded him in death. Visitation was held April 21, 2009 at Little & Sons Beech Grove Chapel. Burial was held April 22 at Washington Park East Cemetery.
Lela J. Hessler, 83, of Indianapolis, died April 16, 2009. She was born May 13, 1925, in Edinburgh, Ind., to the late John and Lela (Parr) Poland. She is survived by her daughters, Janice Smith and Linda Joyce; sister, Frances Lewis; three grandchildren; one great-granddaughter and one great-grandson. Memorial visitation was held April 20 at Glenns Valley United Methodist Church. Burial will take place in Cocoa, Fla., at a later date.
James S. Pettit, Jr., 74, of Beech Grove, IN, died March 31, 2009. He was born June 4, 1934, in Indianapolis to the late James S. Pettit, Sr. and Lena D. (Harvey) Pettit. James was a U.S. Army veteran. He is preceded in death by his parents, James Sr. and Lena Pettit; brother, Robert W. Pettit, Sr.; and sister, Eunice Harvey. He is survived by his nephew, Robert W. (Tammy) Pettit, Jr., nieces Linda (Chris) Deckard and Lisa (Wayne) Roberts and sister-in-law Shirley Pettit. The funeral was held April 6, 2009 at Little & Sons Funeral Home, Beech Grove Chapel. Burial took place at Memorial Park Cemetery.
Portia May Pruitt, 56, of Indianapolis died April 16, 2009. She was born on January 21, 1953, to Lyle Preston and Georgetta (Davis) Blankenship, who preceded her in death. Survivors include son, Benjamin H. (Sylvia Cowan) Brown; sister, Debra Gonzalez and three grandchildren. Visitation was held April 20 at Fountain Square Mortuary. Burial was held at Floral Park Cemetery.
