In some cases, exposing your children to the joys of exotic pet ownership may also mean exposing them to infections and injuries.
Exotic pets like rodents, reptiles and monkeys can carry disease. Parents need to be aware of the dangers — including salmonella infection and even monkey pox — of owning such nontraditional pets as rodents, reptiles, monkeys and more, says a report from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) published in the October issue of the medical journal Pediatrics.

Clinton Young School of International Learning has gone high-tech with classroom education. SMART Technologies Inc. introduced the first SMART Board whiteboard in 1991. With a computer image projected on the board, students can simply use their finger or specialized pens to do a lesson on any subject matter. This technology assists in making whole classroom learning much more interactive.
Adam Page, a 2008 graduate of Beech Grove High School was awarded the first annual Harvey Warrner Scholarship. Adam finished fourth in his class and plans to attend Ball State University to pursue a career in Business. Warrner, former principal of BGHS and Ball State alumnus, recently retired from BGHS after 34 years in education. The scholarship was started in his honor in appreciation for his years of service to Beech Grove Community Schools.
Roncalli High School was selected as an Honorable Mention award recipient for the Sycamore Community Service Leadership Award from Indiana State University for the second year. The award includes a $500 mini-grant for RHS to spend on community service activities and a $1,000 annual scholarship for a student attending ISU in the fall of 2009.

The Baxter YMCA is offering two days of “School’s Out” Camp over Fall Break. Planned activities include guest speakers, swimming, playing, cooking, and creating. Please remember to pack a lunch, two snacks, drinks for the day, swim suit, towel and a life jacket if needed. Camp at the Baxter YMCA, 7900 S. Shelby St., run from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. In Franklin Township, the hours are 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Cost is $31 per day for facility members, $36 per day for program members. An area alternative high school that provides a fresh start for at-risk students from Whiteland High School is getting a new beginning of its own. On Oct. 28 at 6 p.m., Clark-Pleasant Community School Corporation and Indianapolis-based non-profit Simon Youth Foundation will unveil the new site of Clark Pleasant Academy (CPA).

Rosa Parks-Edison Elementary PTA will be hosting their annual school carnival on Nov. 8. The carnival is one of the most highly attended events at Rosa Parks, bringing in a packed house of over 500 to 1,000 parents and their children.

Have you heard the phrase, “It’s all in your head”? Decades of research has shown that what we think about and spend time imagining can shift our perception of reality.
Years ago, my five-year-old nephew used to play all the roster spots on his imaginary baseball team. The ball, bat and glove were real as Sam’s father would pitch and field the ball. Sam’s role was to play every batter.
