Military brief

Air Force Airman Aaron R. Haitsma has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization, and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises, and special training in human relations.

In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

He is the son of Robert Haitsma of Briarhill Drive, Goshen, Ind., and Carrie Mathews of Madison Village East Drive, Indianapolis, Ind.


Coffman & Alloway to wed

Helen Nicole Coffman and Joseph Michael Alloway are engaged to be married Oct. 18 at Holy Cross Catholic Church. Helen is the daughter of Mrs. Robert J. Coffman,Sr. and Joe is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Alloway. The couple originally met while attending kindergarten at St. Roch Catholic School and were later reintroduced through a friend while attending IUPUI. The bride-to-be is a Registered Respiratory Therapist at Kindred Hospital and the groom is a Network Administrator at the law firm Scopelitis, Garvin, Light, Hanson & Feary.


At 100, BGUMC looks back, plans future

A community fixture at the corner of 9th Ave. and Alton, the Beech Grove United Methodist Church has much to celebrate. This Saturday, its members will hold a special service marking the church’s centennial; in September 1908, the Beech Grove congregation was confirmed by what was then the Methodist Episcopal Church.

During their 100 years, BGUMC has constructed a permanent building, added on, merged congregations and bought some new property on Emerson Ave., where they will build their new home.

Retired teacher completes annual triathlon

Mike Sawa seems to be a cross between Superman and the Energizer Bunny.

At age 58, the mild-mannered Greenwood Parks Board president is a super man when it comes to doing strenuous things such as running, bicycling and swimming.
