Freedom From Smoking Classes •

Tobacco is a tough habit to kick and folks often need encouragement and help to quit. St. Francis Hospital & Health Centers and the American Lung Association are offering the step-by-step cessation program, Freedom From Smoking. The next seven-week program begins Sept. 8. The program guides participants through a variety of behavior modification techniques to quit smoking. | Where: St. Francis Community Relations Carson Square Office, 3145 E. LaLeche Meets •

Pregnant women, nursing mothers, and children are invited to the Greenwood La Leche League monthly. Spirit of Women Event •

Actress and author Stacey Halprin to share life-changing weight loss story with Hoosiers. As the tragedy of Sept. 11 struck around her, Stacey Halprin was trapped in her apartment just one mile from the World Trade Center because at 550 pounds, she was unable to escape on her own. Today, Halprin has transformed herself to a healthy 190 pounds and shares her incredible weight loss journey with others. St. Francis Hospital Offers Free Prostate Screening •

St. Francis Hospital & Health Centers and Urology of Indiana are presenting a prostate cancer awareness and early detection program. They are also offering prostate exams. Early detection and treatment options will be discussed. Men over 50 and their spouses or significant others, are encouraged to attend. Where: Education program is Wednesday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at St. Francis Education Center, 5935 S. Emerson Ave., Suite 100. The prostate screenings are Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the St. Francis Mooresville Cancer Center, 1215 Hadley Rd., Ste 105; or on Sat., Sept. 13 from 9 a.m. to noon at St. Francis Indianapolis Cancer Center, 8111 S. Clarian Hospice Needs Volunteers •

The Ruth Lilly Hospice of Clarian is seeking individual volunteers or groups of volunteers to run errands, provide friendship, companionship and emotional support, for both home patients and patients on the Yellow Rose Unit at Methodist Hospital. Other volunteers are needed for clerical and bereavement support. Pre-screening and registration are required, contract Pat Darden, hospice volunteer coordinator, at 962-2077 or pdarden@clarian.org. The seven-week training session begins Sept. 17 and runs through Oct. 29 at 1815 N. Capitol Ave., across from Methodist Hospital. Two session times, either from 1 to 4 p.m. or 6 to 9 p.m.

Respite Service for Parents •

Southport Heights Christian Church is opening a monthly Respite Care Service for parents. The monthly service will be supervised by a registered nurse who specializes in the care of special needs children. Children who are deaf, autistic, have tracheotomies, “G” buttons, or other physical disabilities are welcome. Due to limited space, an application and interview process is required. Group Exercise Certification Class •

Hornet Park Fitness Center and NETA, a non-profit fitness professional association are offering a group exercise certification class. Potential and current fitness instructors will learn basic academic and practical application of teaching group exercise. No college, science, or teaching background required.
