Wilson scholarship established to help Southport grads

Published May 29th, 2008

Throughout his 33 years as a Perry Township educator, Jim Wilson helped countless children go to college and reach their full potential. Now, thanks to scholarship established in his memory, he will continue that mission for many years to come.

Jim Wilson, who passed away in April, was orphaned by the age of 12. He worked his way through college to achieve his dream of becoming a teacher. The fulfillment of this dream resulted in a career that produced a number of teaching awards and honors, including a National Teacher of the Year award from the Valley Forge Freedom Foundation.

In recognition of his years of service and dedication to children, Governor Mitch Daniels named Wilson a Sagamore of the Wabash last fall.

Generations of children who attended Edgewood Grade School, Clinton Young Elementary and Mary Bryan Elementary remember Mr. Wilson for many reasons. Some recall his sense of humor. Others appreciated his creative methods of teaching.

Virtually all of his students knew that he cared about them and wanted them to be successful.

The James E. Wilson Scholarship Fund will help students on the east side of Perry Township as they begin their college education. Administered by the Perry Township Education Foundation, the memorial will award a scholarship each spring to a graduate of Southport High School.

The first scholarship will be awarded in the spring of 2009. Contributions to support the James E. Wilson Scholarship Fund may be sent to the Perry Township Education Foundation.
