Local residents should attend the Beech Grove Redevelopment Commission (RDC) meeting today.
It will start at 7 p.m. in the Hornet Park Community Center, 5245 Hornet Avenue, near the high school.
In a meeting Tuesday at The Southside Times, Mayor Joe Wright, Economic Development Planner Michael R. Shaver and Public Relations Specialist Susan Nelson outlined an ambitious comprehensive-redevelopment plan. Representing The Southside Times were Brian Kelly, chief executive officer of Times Leader Publications; Roger Huntzinger, president of the newspaper division of Times Leader Publications; and Mike Alexander, editor.
With the near completion of Emerson Avenue Gateway, other areas of the city will be targeted, including Main Street, for sprucing up.
Shaver, a long-time specialist in community redevelopment, cited the following goals:
- Reducing neighborhood blight
- Attracting young professionals to live here
- Enhancing public safety
- Improving undeveloped commercial and industrial properties
- Bringing sewers, water lines and other utilities up to standard
When these goals have been accomplished, Shaver believes homeowners will benefit from improved property values.
